One way of backing up your data, is using a pen drive, jump drive, etc.. or an external USB hard drive. These are very fine ways of backing up. Just keep in mind how important is this data. Using a jump drive or external drive has moving parts that could break.
Maybe use a DVD-R or RW to burn your data each night or each week, no moving parts less chances of braking. There is also method called RAID 1 or (mirring). Using two SATA hard drives to back up automatically. I do recommend a weekly or monthly DVD-R back up if computer is connected to the Internet do to viruses.
There is also System Restore Point builtin a Windows feature that can not always be relied on, but don't dismiss this option. You need to create your own, do not rely on the auto restores made by the system. You should always use yours that you created. Also, do not forget that when you go back to an earlier point, the data you created from that point to know your data will be lost. IMPORTANT!!! Make sure you back up your data from the after the restore point you wish to go back to.
